What Is Joint Employment?

Joint Employment is an engagement model that can be incredibly beneficial for some organisations. It is an agreement between two parties, usually a recruitment agency and a provider of services that offer joint employment. In the terms of this agreement, the agency is responsible for finding work for its contractors and subcontractors, whereas the service provider holds responsibility for processing payroll for contractors & subcontractors and carries out duties relating to human resources.

Usually, when a worker is enrolled in a joint employment agreement, their contract will specify two employers, and their employment status will reflect this. This model is often compared to a traditional umbrella model, however in reality it is very different. Under the joint employment model, employment costs are not subject to VAT as they are classed as disbursements. This is because the service provider pays the workers wages and is reimbursed by the agency without being subjected to VAT, whereas the service charge that is paid to the service provider is paid separately and is subject to VAT.
